Climate Change requires an ideological shift in how we think about infrastructure

Hunter French Illustration from Vice Magazine shows a broken sewer pipe craned

Illustration by Hunter French, Vice Magazine

How does our infrastructure interact with the environment? Our drain pipes, reservoirs, power lines, roads, sewage systems, and more are all designed based on past climate data. But with the climate crisis comes the uncomfortable realization that the past can’t predict what we’ll  get in the future.

Design and Build Adaptable, Flexible Infrastructure

Perhaps, it is necessary to consider more adaptable and flexible versions of infrastructure, such as green infrastructure, to meet our modern challenges.

Below is an interesting article that suggests thinking about the consequences right at the beginning of the design process. Engineers and city planners can work to help avoid the failures.

Stormwater Capture Co presents webinar for Eastern US landscape architects

Engineering Vegetated Roofing Systems to Optimize Stormwater Management
Urban centers have high concentrations of impervious areas which pose a challenge in managing large volumes of stormwater. Heavy rain events or back-to-back storms cause problems like flooding, property damage, and combined overflow sewer discharge. Green infrastructure, such as vegetated roofs, can help mitigate these problems because they restore the hydrologic cycle in urbanized areas. Vegetated roof systems designed for maximum stormwater management decrease the volume of stormwater within the urban core and reliably delay travel time of stormwater to the treatment plant. These retention and detention strategies help alleviate the burden of heavy stormwater on our cities’ infrastructure. REGISTRATION IS LIMITED.

Webinar Learning Objectives
1. The distinction between stormwater retention and detention
2. The importance of detention in urban centres
3. Existing roof top technologies
4. Using biomimicry to re-engineer vegetated roofing system
5. Collaboration: Landscape Architects, Architects, Civil Engineers

Have a Clear Maintenance Plan

The change in seasons and arrival of Autumn requires building maintenance before winter falls. This includes landscapes around and on top of our buildings – green roofs.

The beautiful, living roofs that dot our urban landscape also require care. Some municipalities call for rooftop maintenance such as Washington, DC which requires rooftop inspections twice a year. Furthermore, many warranties are tied to performing maintenance and filing reports. Ultimately, maintenance keeps your green roof performing as it should.

Maintenance requirements can vary slightly with different designs and plant materials. Each assembly should have a clear maintenance plan.

Grasshopper on a dormant green roof

Fall Maintenance Checklist

  • Fall weeding
  • Clean up garbage and matted tree leaves
  • Drain inspection
  • Infill with plugs and mats, as needed
  • Temp or permanent irrigation line blowout (to avoid freezing)
  • Plot your spring game plan, make note of materials or action for following visit

The extent of maintenance above depends on the design, the plant selection, the depth of growing medium, the roof’s exposure and the weather. While it is hard to predict the weather, a designer can opt for a system with low maintenance features to reduce overall labor and cost.  Read more on how to design a low maintenance green roof, here.

Design with Maintenance in Mind

Top Four Design Considerations

1. Safe Access

Easy access and safety considerations make for quicker maintenance.

2. Lightweight System

Lightweight systems such as StormCap™ achieve desired stormwater management goals and are easy to install and typically require lower maintenance. A thin-layered system with a dense vegetated mat over 2-4″ engineered growing medium tends to be less inviting for harmful weeds and therefore require less routine, manual weeding.

3. Plant Selection
Hardy and drought tolerant sedum plants grown outdoors are ideal. Sedum are more resistant to stress and extreme temperatures.  Sedum mats can be successfully installed in autumn or winter months. Maintenance personnel should be familiar with the green roof plants and the owner’s green roof aesthetic preference as some “weeds” might be tolerated in addition to the plant selection.

4. Irrigation
Access to water, with adequate pressure, close by the rooftop is critical for supplemental irrigation in the establishment phase and during periods of drought.

For instance, he will measure water retention and detention, as well as heat transfer, and compare to a traditional black roof. It is a great opportunity to get up close and personal with innovative green roof technology.

Touch, feel and witness how a green roof plays a vital role in retaining and detaining rainfall, attenuating stormwater, mitigating the urban heat island effect and reducing the environmental footprint.

Many Benefits of Green Roofs

For example, vegetated roofing systems reduce the environmental footprints the following ways:

Water The green roof helps detain and retain rainfall at its source and control runoff.

Energy saving Through shading, insulation and evaporative cooling the green roof helps reduce energy use.

Climate Green roof reduces flash floods and combined sewage overflow. It addition, it mitigates the urban heat island effect.

Ask us about the latest Innovation in Green Roofs: Detention Technology

Powered by the Purple-Roof Concept, StormCapTM +Detention is a green roof that works to manage stormwater even when it is wet.

It reduces the severity of flash floods by delaying roof runoff during the largest rain events, and it even works when it is totally wet! Rain is temporarily accumulated on the roof which reduces the need for underground cisterns, thus freeing-up valuable underground space that can instead be used for profitable purposes like retail or parking space. SC+D offers property owners a clear return on investment.

Close up view of city sewer during rainstorm.

Green infrastructure can mitigate stormwater pollution.

Stormwater is the main way pollution gets into the rivers and waterways

A good rainfall cleans the city streets. As a result, all the road salt, cigarette butts, animal feces, antifreeze and other garbage is swept up in the rain and into the storm sewers and our waterways.

Meanwhile, the Sluiceway illustrates how green roof system helps retain and detain rainfall onsite and subsequently mitigate stormwater pollution.

How Green Roofs Help

Volunteers can pour gallons of water onto two sloping platforms.  Platform One will mimic a typical roof and feature a waterproofing membrane and trash that would be found on road ways and end up in the sewers. Platform Two features the StormCapTM pre-vegetated system that collects rainfall and helps with stormwater management.  At the end of each platform a storage bin will collect the “rainfall” and trash.  The audience will witness the performance of the StormCapTM vegetated roofing system and learn why vegetative roofing technology plays a key role in stormwater management.

Image to the left depicts green roof benefits of protecting and cooling a building and capturing stormwater at the source.

StormCap™+Detention Helps Mitigate Floods

StormCap™+Detention green roof system is engineered to optimize stormwater  management. It detention tool that mimics watersheds and aquifers to help mitigate urban flooding.

Lessens strain on sewers.

Decreases combined sewer overflow (CSO).

Detention technology allows the green roof to face second day and extra large storms. It is not dependent on weather to provide a repeat performance and recharges in as little as a few hours.  StormCap™+Detention  stores water temporarily and limits the rate at which water flows from the roof drain.

Innovative Technology Mimics Nature

Friction in nature includes tall grasses in meadows, dense masses of reeds in wetlands, or layers of leaves on a forest floor. Friction-detention in

vegetated roofs is a technological innovation inspired by nature to achieve rooftop SWM in dense urban areas.

Contact us to help run stormwater calculations specific to your project.

Clear Return on Investment (ROI)

StormCap™+Detention provides a clear ROI by reducing or eliminating cisterns and bioretention facilities and freeing up valuable space for income-generating development. It even works on a sloped roof!

Stormwater management is unique to each project. Let us start the process and run project-specific calculations.  Contact us for more info.

Other Benefits

  • Provides better plant performance: StormCap™ retains almost double the water of traditional green roofs, and StormCap™+Detention retains about 10-20% more than that! This increases water availabilty for better plant performance.
  • Achieves sustainability goals: StormCap™+Detention is a great way for companies or buildings to show commitment to the environment.
  • Increases real estate values: Green roofs provide usable or visible amenity space that increases rents and real estate value. StormCap™+Detention further increases real estate value by freeing up land
  • Offers greater cooling benefits: All green roofs help cool the building, but StormCap™ and StormCap™+Detention improve cooling by providing more water for evaporative heat loss.
  • Extends roof lifespan: Green roofs buffer the roofing membrane from thermal flux. StormCap™ and StormCap™+Detention do an even better job of this for the same reason that cooling benefits are greater.

Superior Components, Powered by Urbanscape™

The engineered base layers include Urbanscape™’s needled mineral hydro blanket, made solely of virgin rock fibre by Knauf Insulation. This mineral wool has no binders and therefore has superior retention of 90% of water by volume and withstands freeze/thaw cycles.

Most of StormCap™+Detention’s base layers come in rolls that are easy to transport and install. It is a fully customizable system with biodiversity options.  And, can be cut in any shape or size to create logos or icons on the roof!
